Mid-Autumn Festival Customs
The Mid-Autumn Festival originated from the ancestors' worship of celestial phenomena and evolved from the autumn moon worship in ancient times. It is a festival that combines many customs such as the emperor's moon worship, autumn festival, moon viewing and the legend of the Moon Palace.
1.Mooncake Eating Customs
Mooncakes are also called moon cakes, harvest cakes, palace cakes, reunion cakes, etc. They symbolize reunion. People use them to worship the moon and give them to relatives and friends. The earliest mooncakes originated from the food for celebrating victory in the Tang Dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty, General Li Jing won the battle against the Turks by using mooncakes to pass on messages. He returned victorious on August 15. Since then, eating mooncakes has become an annual custom.
2.Moon-watching customs
The custom of moon-watching during the Mid-Autumn Festival was formally formed in the Tang Dynasty. People would build colorful pavilions, gather in restaurants, climb to the top of mountains, or go boating on the water, drinking and singing, often all night long. After the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, the excitement of moon-watching is still not over, and it is called "chasing the moon". On the night of the second day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, people would invite relatives and friends to continue watching the moon.
3.Lantern Riddles Custom
On the night of the full moon in the Mid-Autumn Festival, many lanterns are hung in public places, and people gather together to guess the riddles written on the lanterns. As this is a favorite activity for most young men and women, and love stories are also told during these activities, guessing lantern riddles during the Mid-Autumn Festival has also evolved into a form of love between men and women.
4.Enjoy osmanthus flowers and drink osmanthus wine
People often enjoy osmanthus during the Mid-Autumn Festival and eat various foods made from osmanthus, with cakes and candies being the most common. On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, gazing at the osmanthus in the moon, smelling the fragrance of osmanthus, drinking a cup of osmanthus honey wine, and celebrating the sweetness of the family have become a beautiful enjoyment of the festival.
